David Halen

halenBorn in Bellevue, Ohio, in 1959, David Halen was raised in Springfield and Warrensburg, Missouri.  He began playing the violin at the age of six, studying with both his mother and father. In 1979 he was a Fulbright Scholar at the Freiburg Hochschule für Musik in Germany.  Mr. Halen was assistant concertmaster with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, from 1983 to 1991.  Joining the Saint Louis Symphony in 1991, he was named concertmaster in September 1995 under Music Directors Leonard Slatkin and Hans Vonk. He has appeared frequently as soloist and concertmaster with the Saint Louis, San Francisco and Houston Symphonies. During the past two summers he has served as concertmaster at the Aspen Music Festival under David Zinman and Artistic Director of the Innsbrook Institute, an intensive program designed to provide outstanding young students with the highest level of classical music instruction and performance opportunities. He has also been a featured speaker at workshops with the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington DC. Mr. Halen plays on a 1753 Johannes Baptiste Guadagnini violin, made in Milan, Italy.
